review

I've been trying to compile a "Holy Grail" list of products that my overly-sensitive, bad-natured, hissy-fit-having skin agrees with for a very long time now.

I have very oily, very hyper-sensitive skin that has never responded to any prescription treatments from doctors or dermatologists. And if that isn't enough, I also suffer from what has been diagnosed as Cholinergic Urticaria (scratches appearing on skin after sweating..i.e..from exercising or whatever) and Dermographism, where long, welt-like scratches will present themselves on my back, arms and neck for no apparent reason and at any given time. The scratches look as if someone/something has attacked my skin with a vengence. Needless to say, the breakouts causes terrible stinging, burning, raised and inflamed skin and leaves the most unsightly marks after each episode.

On the days when these conditions occur (they are not food-related that I can see), forget about being able to take a bath or shower or allowing water and especially soap on the skin because it can really hurt.

After having success with Cetaphil's bar soap and moisturizing cream, I decided to try the Restoraderm Skin Restoring Body Wash after seeing it on sale at Target. And, boy, am I glad I did.

Not only has my skin lost that tight, parched, and itchy feeling, but many of the old scratch marks from years ago on my back and arms seem to be lightening up and fading as well. And while I am not confortable saying that a product has "cured" my skin afflictions, Restoraderm has done more than I ever imagined could happen. The frequency of the breakouts has also changed, and when they do come, the swellings and irritation is very minor and slight and the skin returns to normal quickly without the red welts and scratches ever forming.

My sincere thanks to Cetaphil! And, yeah, this stuff does cost an arm and a leg, but in my opinion, it's worth every single penny. I'm just so happy to finally be able to add another item to my very, very short list of "HG" skincare products.

Prosperity and peace to all!

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

Our baby daughter started suffering from either dermatitis or eczema a year ago - just a red bumpy rash - and unscented Dove was recommended by the pediatrician, pediatric dermatologist, and allergist. Unfortunately, they didn't know the manufacturer had changed the product formula. We really wish they had - it would have saved her a year of terrible itching its new formula caused.

A change in formula to Alimentum resulted in dramatic improvement after a milk allergy was diagnosed. However, small raised red patches and intense itching that caused frantic scratching to the point of bleeding soon became major issues; we visited a second dermatologist - atypical eczema was diagnosed.

Treatment until just a few days ago had been warm daily baths and unscented Dove, along with hydrocortisone 1% on spots and Cetaphil cream all over. Children's Zyrtec did not seem to alleviate the itching, although it did help her sleep. A prescription for Calcitrene did not help either. Only a physical barrier - footed PJs with both zippers and snaps, kept her from picking at her skin constantly.

Quite by accident I used unscented Dove two weeks ago. I suddenly found myself having intense itching as well. Could it be that my daughter was allergic to Dove? It did make sense as Dove was used directly on her exposed areas, arms and torso, and she had her most intense and frantic itching episodes after her bath. We discontinued Dove immediately and her intense itching subsided overnight.

What I didn't understand was why I was suddenly was allergic to the new bars. After doing some research it turns out that Dove has discontinued the old Dove unscented bar along with the Dove for sensitive skin (the one with sweet almond oil - itself an allergen) and combined them into one bar, Dove Unscented for Sensitive Skin. In so doing, it's changed its main surfuctant and other ingredients - in other words, the Dove doctors have been recommending for years is no longer the same product.

An online search revealed complaints about itchiness and the new Dove. One website site in particular on the treatment of eczema has an enormous amount of information on detergents, soap and their effects on eczema - especially the change in Dove soap. It no longer recommends it for eczema. Please see the comments section for more information.

Interestingly, itchiness and redness with the new formulation was brought up by a customer in Dove's own website and no solution is given other than Customer Service's phone number.

I've also found some mentions of another Dove ingredient, "Sodium tallowate" - tallow, sometimes derived from cattle - as sometimes causing a reaction in people with milk allergies, causing flare ups in acne and eczema. Whether this too caused an allergic reaction in our daughter, I don't know.

We thought our case was isolated. However, it's possible that the skin problems related to the new Dove may be more widespread. I hope this information helps as this change was done quietly by the manufacturer.

We also found sweet almond oil in the Cetaphil cream she was prescribed - an allergen for anyone with a tree nut allergy. We stopped using it later and the remaining red raised patches she had also diappeared. Other changes that were recommended including a change to Tide Free - it didn't help my daughter but it healed my red, cracked hands, the result of doing laundry 2-3x a day with All Free.

Granted, individual reactions to products vary but the new ingredients in Dove may be causing allergies rather than helping them. None of the three doctors consulted knew of the formula change in Dove nor realized that the "Dove + cetaphil" combo they were recommending were causing the very symptoms (itching and rash) they were trying to treat. It's possible parents may just assume it's ongoing eczema, just like they did. It may not be.

** Update 4/13 **

As noted in my review above the allergen that caused my daughter's eczema was detergent - in this case, the surfuctants in Dove. We then found out that exposure to other sulfates, such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (the main ingredient in Johnson's Baby Bath Head to Toe Baby Wash) are huge triggers for eczema in general - not just my child (why don't doctors know this?!). They may also contribute to scalp eczema - important to know as most shampoos contain SLS.

The solution is simple - avoid anything with detergents and/ or sulfates and switch mostly to soap-based products. These are way milder than what we've been led to believe by advertising. Please see comments section for alternatives to Dove and baby washes with SLS.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

I purchased this skin brush after learning about a technique called "dry brushing" (google it). It is supposed to increase blood flow, lymph drainage and help remove dead skin cells. If nothing else, it sure feels great! After reading the reviews, I chose to purchase this brush. It was just supposed to be my brush, but after seeing how good it felt, my whole family wants to use it (including my 2 year old). The bristles are coarse, but you are no supposed to use a lot of pressure. I was always told to only use the amount of pressure it would take to move a coin across the table. You just brush 2 minutes per day before showering and brush toward the heart (don't brush the face) using long gentle strokes. It feels great. I did see some reviews about the handle not staying on. The wood handle needs to be turned over and inserted that way, which is opposite from the way that you would expect the wood to slide in to the back of the brush. I made that same mistake when I got the brush, but turned the handle over and slid it on that way and it has never fallen off the brush since. The company should really put that on the instructions because I had initially thought that mine was useless as well. I would definately recommend this brush if you are looking for a skin brush. The price is reasonable. The handle is long enough to reach the back. The bristles are made from tampico fiber, which is the unbleached stem of the agave plant. The instructions say to clean the brush periodically with soap and water. Happy brushing!

I started to use this soap head to toe over a year ago when I first saw signs of eczema. This was the only soap that didn't irritate my skin while keeping it clean. I look for simple ingredients and this fits the bill. My whole family uses it head to toe, including my 4 year old and we all love it. It is especially good for dry skin as well. I highly recommend it.

This is my second review of this product. When I first got the brushes I noted in my previous review that the bristles started falling out with the first use. The company contacted me the next day and offered me a refund or a new set of brushes. I found this very refreshing as most companies don't go out of their way to contact someone who writes a mediocre review. Will buy from them again!

review

I haven't been using this oil for long, but I am an instant devotee! About me: African American & Native American; natural, kinky curly hair; acne prone, dry skin; 28 years old.

I tried this oil before, when I first stopped straightening my hair. I hadn't quite gotten acquainted to the needs of my hair at the time, and tried slathering it on with nothing else. That was a massive fail - it was too thick - no comb was getting through that!

Fast forward two years, as I began the oil cleansing method (OCM) with good results, trying only coconut oil. During this time, I started to read how people love castor oil the most for the OCM, so I gave it a try again. This time as suggested by others, I mixed it 50/50 with a lighter oil to make it spreadable - extra virgin olive oil. The results were MAGICAL.

My face instantly fell in love - removing all dirt, grime, make-up, dry skin, and leaving my face supple and delicious, and karate chopping the few acne spots I had. That lead me to trying it on my body as a moisturizer. OMG - DELICIOUS SKIN! Mind you, I have terribly flaky, dry legs. BE GONE, said the castor oil!

Then I tried it on my kinky, curly hair - BUTTER! It made my hair softer than it has ever been in my entire life. My hair was in a good state already, but there was some minor breakage every time I detangled or manipulated my hair. Not any more!

The best part about this - there is NO GREASINESS. I mean NONE! No more stains on the clothes, no more greasy head rests in the car... I am in awe! BUY IT!

Olay Age Defying Moisturizing Body Wash With Vitamin E 13.5 Oz

Olay Age Defying Moisturizing Body Wash With Vitamin E 13.5 Oz

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

My 30-something year old skin has developed serious dryness issues, especially during the winter months. The low price of this wash was a great incentive, but ultimately the mid-range rating on Good Guide (dot com) of 5.8 made me want to try this product. These days I'm big on what goes in and ON my body, so the fact that the ingredients in this creamy soap are for the most part safe is extremely important. Also important is the fact that it delivers on its moisturizing promises!

My skin is now more supple and needs much less lotion during the course of the day, and my back (you know the spot I'm talking about) is much less dry and itchy. This also works great as a shaving cream. Yes, as the body wash formula includes Olay facial moisturizer, this smells like goopy "old lady soap." Meaning it smells formulaic, but not necessarily perfume-y like most heavily scented body washes on the market. The lather is so-so: use a few drops on a loofa, then repeat if necessary for more bubbles.

With stacking a coupon + subscribe and save, I was able to try Olay Age Defying body wash for just under two bucks. Definitely worth that cost, as this is a small bottle (in fact, the smaller 13.5 oz size is a good thing as no wash goes to waste AND the bottle easily fits in the shower). Not exactly "age defying," but it cleans and moisturizes wonderfully.

I personally love the smell of Irish Spring Products, but the GEAR line is my favorite. This soap leaves your skin moisturized as well as fresh all day long. After a long day at work and the gym, my skin still has a fresh scent. The soap also doesn't have that waxy feel like so many bar soaps do.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

There is no better bar soap than Dove. It does not leave a filmy feeling on your skin after rinsing. Also does not dry out your skin like other bars & washes. White scent is light and fresh.

CUSTOMER REVIEW
